Cantillon has commenced Phase 1 in the complex demolition of the Heygate Estate, a massive concrete warren containing 1,100 homes. The project forms part of the £1.5 billion regeneration of Elephant & Castle, a scheme that it is anticipated will be completed in several phases over the next 15 years. The Heygate Estate redevelopment is set to be one of the biggest regeneration schemes in Northern Europe. Residents gradually began moving out of the 55 acre estate, which was originally built in 1974, three years ago, with them being re-housed by Southwark Council. Now various blocks are vacant, Cantillon have started demolition work. Cantillon started Phase 1 on February 14th 2011, with the works expected to be complete by July 1st 2011. Cantillon has been appointed as Principal Contractor for the complex and varied project working for developer Lend Lease on behalf of Southwark Council. The first stage of the regeneration will include the careful demolition of four concrete housing blocks and the removal of a pedestrian bridge. Cantillon will begin with the asbestos removal, soft strip and demolition of an 8-storey and two 4-storey precast concrete blocks that make up 1-87 Wingrave Balfour Street. |
