Athletes Village glory for Cantillon

Ahead of construction works at the 2012 London Athletes Village, Cantillon is bringing its usual gold standard of demolition service to the Stratford site.

Work has already been underway at the 14-acre development, where Cantillon was safely stripping interior equipment and then demolishing the existing Frigoscandia Cold Stores, in Temple Mills Lane.

The company's £2.5m contract with main contractor Bovis Lend Lease includes clearing and levelling two large warehouses, a refrigeration plant and blast features, lorry parking, offices and workshops.

Cantillon's specialist removal service teams were also being deployed to safely extract all hazardous materials, including ammonia, glycol, asbestos, fuel tanks, transformers, gas, electricity and phone lines.

This also involved removing highly poisonous Giant Hog Weed and Japanese Knot Weed from the area.

Before work began in August 2007, Cantillon had to carry out both ecological and bat surveys, as well as liaising with Cat Protection, the National Grid and CTRL.

Cantillon's contract was completed in December 2007. The first construction phase, which involves the development of 4,200 residential buildings and other accommodation at the village, began in early 2008.

"Cantillon impressed everybody with an award winning safety performance bringing the job in on time and budget, whilst sponsoring the sustainability initiatives by best practice environmental measures and work with the community in a local school."

Peter Jacobs, Bovis Lend Lease.
